FAQ
The answers too all your powerlifting questions
What is powerlifting?
Powerlifting is a sport that specifically encompasses three types of lifts: bench press, squat, and deadlift.
Is powerlifting good for weight loss?
Yes! It is a common misconception that powerlifting always results in weight gain from increased muscle mass. In reality, powerlifting helps to replace body fat with muscle mass, resulting in overall weight loss.
What features should I look for in a power cage/squat rack?
If you want to invest in some proper powerlifting equipment, it is important that you find something that is versatile and caters to your objectives. Look for sturdy power cages with a high weight capacity, as well as something that can be adjusted for any kind of lift including squats and bench presses.
What’s the difference between bumper plates and cast iron plates?
Cast iron plates are the classic material for powerlifting. They make that familiar “clunking” sound when in use and sometimes have a powder coated finish. On the other hand, bumper plates have a rubber construction that can help protect your floors during lifts, and are more suited for aggressive powerlifting. Both types of plates will fit on olympic barbells.
How much weight is good for a beginner powerlifter?
As the saying goes, it is always better to start small and work your way up. If you are just getting started in powerlifting, you can complete most lifts using just a pair of 45 lb, 25 lb, and 10 lb plates. However, as you improve and get stronger, you are going to want to look into upgrading and adding more plates to your home gym.
Can weight plates damage my floors?
While bumper plates do protect your floors more than cast iron plates, both can damage your floors if dropped. We always recommend you protect your floors with gym floor tiles, so that you can workout as hard as you want without worrying about your floors.
What is the difference between dumbbells and barbells?
A dumbbell has a short handle (usually about 20 inches long) with a weight on each end. They're handheld free weights that are added to muscle building workouts to increase intensity. A barbell is a long bar(around 60 inches long) with removable weights at each end. Barbells are also free weights that are used for maximizing muscle growth in your biggest muscle groups. While both the barbell and dumbbell are used for muscle growth, dumbbells are better for isolation exercises, endurance, and stability and barbells are better for heavier lifts.
